Wei Li
Principal Scientist, AI Platform Silicon Valley NLU

Dr. Li joined JD March 2017, focusing on Natural Language Deep Parsing and Understanding (NLU) and its applications in e-commerce scenarios such as product knowkledge graph and automatic customer service. A hands-on architect and computational linguist with 30 years of professional experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Dr. Li has a track record of making NLP work robust real-life in industry. He has built three large-scale NLU systems, all transformed into real-life, globally distributed products. Before joining JD, Dr. Li has served Netbase as Chief Scientist for 10 years and Cymfony as VP R&D for 8 years. During Cymfony years, Dr. Li won 17 US government SBIR research grants in the area of Information Extraction. He led the team in winning the first Question Answering competition (TREC-8 QA Track). During Netbase years, he has built a multilingual social media mining sistem (covering 20 languages) based on NLU, with products serving the fortune 500, with a total of 17 industry awards. Dr. Li has published more than thirty academic papers or book chapters on NLP at journals and top international conferences. He has been invited to give keynote talks on deep parsing and its applications for big data mining on various occasions, including Beijing University, Harvard University School of Medicine, Taiwan's Academia Sinica, Chinese Information Society Annual Meeting. In 2015, Dr Li was awarded Top 50 Most Inspiring Alumnus of SFU.
