Xiaochuan Niu
Senior director of Speech group

Before joining JD.com, Dr. Niu has been with Apple for almost 6 years, since the birth of Apple’s voice assistant, Siri. He served as a principal research scientist in Siri’s speech group, where he led a research and engineering group that continually provided state-of-art models to the ASR engine under the hood. Before Aplple, Dr. Niu has led engineering groups in a couple of start-up companies, focusing on applications of speech recognition and text-to-speech techniques. In the early days of his career, he served as a staff research member at IBM China Research Lab, building acoustic models for IBM ViaVoice speech recognition systems and doing research in the field of text-to-speech.

Dr. Niu got his PhD degree of EECS from the Center for Spoken Language Understanding at Oregon Health and Science University, master from the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and bachelor from Tsinghua University.
